Tile Installation Edmonton: Large Format Floors in Crystallina

2,000 Square Feet of Large-Format and Wood-Look Tile on a Crystallina New Build

Crystallina Nera is a newer northeast Edmonton community along Manning Drive, made up almost entirely of single-family builds finished in the past decade. New construction here often calls for an unusually large tile scope because builders are increasingly running tile across the full main floor rather than ending it at the entrance. On this Crystallina new build The Tile Experts tiled roughly 2,000 square feet of total flooring across every floor surface in the home. The main floor entrance, the main bathroom floor, and the two upstairs bathroom floors were laid in 24 by 24 large-format porcelain. Every other floor surface in the home was laid in a 4 by 48 hardwood-style plank tile.

What Whole-House Tile Flooring Actually Means

Running tile across the entire main floor (and most of the upstairs) is a different scope than a typical new-build tile package where ceramic ends at the entrance and the rest of the house runs in hardwood, laminate, or LVP. Durability: porcelain is the longest-life floor finish available on a residential build. It will outlast hardwood, engineered wood, laminate, and LVP by decades. Maintenance: porcelain is non-absorptive, so spills, pet accidents, and winter slush wipe clean without conditioner or refinishing. Resale: a whole-house porcelain floor reads premium on a listing and removes the buyer’s mental flooring-replacement budget from the offer math. On 2,000 square feet across one home, the install discipline is what makes or breaks the result.

The 24×24 Large-Format Zones: Entrance and Bathrooms

The main entrance, the main bathroom floor, and the two upstairs bathroom floors carry a 24 by 24 porcelain in a straight-lay pattern. Purpose: the 24 by 24 module is the right format for a high-traffic entrance and for bathroom floors because it puts fewer joints into a wet-zone floor where water and dirt accumulate at the grout line. Property: at this format every tile has to sit in a true plane against the substrate or lippage shows up immediately at the joint, because there is more tile face on each side of the joint to register against the eye. Relationship: running the 24 by 24 across all four zones (entrance plus three bathroom floors) gives the home a consistent large-format story on every floor where wet performance matters most.

The 4×48 Wood-Look Plank Zones: Everywhere Else

Every floor surface beyond the entrance and the three bathrooms (the kitchen, the great room, the dining area, the hallways, the upstairs landings, and the bedrooms in this scope) was tiled in a 4 by 48 hardwood-style plank porcelain. The 4 by 48 format reads as a wide hardwood plank but performs as porcelain: dimensionally stable, non-absorptive, scratch-resistant against pet claws and chair legs, and unaffected by humidity cycling. The plank lay was set in a balanced offset (not 50/50, which is structurally weak on plank tile, but a deliberate offset matched to the tile manufacturer’s spec sheet) so the joints stagger naturally without producing the bow-induced lippage that a 50/50 brick lay puts at every joint on a long plank.

VersaBond LFT Mortar: The Right Bond Coat for Both Formats

Every floor surface in the home (24 by 24 entrance and bathrooms plus 4 by 48 plank everywhere else) was set with VersaBond LFT Mortar. Purpose: VersaBond LFT is a polymer-modified, large-and-heavy-tile rated thinset specifically engineered for oversized formats like 24 by 24 large-format and 4 by 48 plank. Property: the medium-bed capability lets the bond coat fill minor variation in subfloor flatness so every tile sits in a true plane against the substrate, which is exactly the discipline both formats demand. Relationship: using one mortar product across the entire 2,000 square foot scope keeps the bond chemistry consistent from one room to the next, and the transitions between the entrance, the bathrooms, and the wood-look zones stay flush at every doorway.

Layout: Centerlines Carried Room to Room

A 2,000 square foot tile install across one home is a layout problem before it is a setting problem. Each room has its own door swing, its own focal sight line, and its own cabinet or vanity face, and the tile layout has to honour every one of them without producing a wandering joint anywhere on the floor. We started by snapping a master centerline at the front entrance and carried that reference through every doorway into the adjacent rooms. From there each zone got a secondary centerline (at the kitchen island, at each vanity face, at each bedroom door) and the cuts at the room perimeters fell out balanced rather than as full tile on one side and a sliver on the other. The transition between the 24 by 24 entrance and the 4 by 48 plank in the great room was planned so the joint line lands cleanly at the doorway threshold.

Grouting With Prism Across 2,000 Square Feet

Every floor in the home was grouted with Prism Grout once the setting work was complete. Purpose: running one grout colour across the 24 by 24 entrance, the three bathrooms, and the 4 by 48 plank zones ties the entire main floor and upstairs together as one continuous design composition. Property: Prism is a high-performance, stain-resistant calcium-aluminate grout that holds its colour through years of foot traffic, pet wear, and the wet cycling of bathroom floors. Relationship: we matched the grout tone to the dominant face of each tile so the joints disappear into the surface and the floors read as continuous porcelain and continuous plank rather than as grids of joints.

Crystallina Whole-House Tile FAQ

How much does a 2,000 square foot whole-house tile package cost on a Crystallina new build?
For a build of this scope (24 by 24 large-format across the entrance and three bathrooms plus 4 by 48 wood-look plank across the remaining main floor and upstairs), plan on 28,000 to 48,000 dollars in tile-scope labour and material, depending on tile selection.

Why mix 24×24 large-format and 4×48 wood-look on one home instead of running one tile everywhere?
The 24 by 24 puts fewer joints into wet-zone bathrooms and the high-traffic entrance, which is the right call where water and dirt accumulate. The 4 by 48 reads as hardwood across the living and bedroom zones, which is the warmer, more residential feel those rooms want. Matching format to function on each zone is the smarter long-term design.

How long does a 2,000 square foot tile install take in Crystallina?
For a project of this scope, plan on four to six weeks of tile work staged across the trades schedule, sequenced after the rough mechanical and drywall and before the finish carpenter starts on baseboards.
