Tile Installation Edmonton: Whole Home Package in Crystallina

Whole-Home Tile Package on a Crystallina New Build

Crystallina Nera is a newer northeast Edmonton community along Manning Drive, made up almost entirely of single-family builds finished in the past decade. New construction here typically calls for a coordinated tile scope across multiple rooms rather than a single surface, and this Crystallina project is a clean example of that approach. The Tile Experts handled the full tile package for the home: a stacked-pattern fireplace surround in 12 by 24 porcelain, a mosaic vanity backsplash and kitchen backsplash, and a main bathroom with a 12 by 24 floor and tub surround in a random staggered pattern. Every surface was coordinated as one trade scope, with the bond coats matched to format and the grout unified across the whole project.

The Fireplace: 12×24 Porcelain in a Stacked Lay

The fireplace surround is the visual anchor of the great room, and on a new build it sets the design tone for the entire main floor. The Crystallina fireplace is clad in 12 by 24 porcelain in a stacked lay (also called a grid lay), with every joint aligned vertically and horizontally rather than offset like a brick pattern. The stacked geometry reads quiet, architectural, and modern, which is exactly the right tone for a newer home. It is also the most demanding pattern for an installer because any drift in level or plumb produces a wandering joint that the eye catches on every course. We snapped a laser reference at the floor and at the mantel line and verified every vertical joint with a four-foot level before the mortar set.

ProLite LFT Mortar: The Right Bond Coat for a Stacked 12×24

The fireplace was set with ProLite LFT Mortar. Purpose: ProLite LFT is a lightweight, large-and-heavy-tile rated polymer-modified mortar specifically formulated to support oversized formats on a vertical surface without slump while the bond coat grabs. Property: the lightweight body holds an unusually high non-sag value for a vertical application, which is exactly what a stacked-lay 12 by 24 needs because every tile has to hang at the same plane as its neighbours, and slump produces immediate lippage at every joint. Relationship: on a heat-loaded vertical like a fireplace, the polymer-modified bond layer absorbs thermal cycling from the gas insert without telegraphing a hairline crack at the joint. ProLite LFT is the right product family for this use.

The Mosaic Vanity and Kitchen Backsplash: Same Adhesive, Same Visual Language

The vanity splash in the main bathroom and the kitchen backsplash both carry mosaic tile, set with ReliaBond Tile Adhesive. Purpose: ReliaBond is a Type 1 organic mastic engineered for interior dry-wall installations with mesh-backed mosaic, where the tile is not exposed to standing water or freeze cycling. Property: the pre-mixed adhesive has the grab strength to hold a mosaic sheet vertically without sag from the counter line up to the underside of the upper cabinets, with consistent film thickness behind every small piece. Relationship: using the same mosaic family on the vanity and the kitchen creates a visual thread between two rooms that would otherwise feel disconnected in the floor plan. The bathroom and the kitchen end up reading as part of one home rather than as two standalone rooms.

The Main Bathroom: 12×24 Tub Surround and Floor in a Random Stagger

The main bathroom carries 12 by 24 porcelain across both the tub surround and the floor, set with VersaBond Mortar in a random staggered pattern. Purpose: VersaBond is a polymer-modified professional-grade thinset rated for porcelain on cement-board and concrete substrates. Property: the polymer modification gives the bond coat the flex to absorb the thermal cycling of a bathroom with daily hot-water use. Relationship: the random stagger is the layout that hides the slight bow porcelain develops along its long axis during kiln cooling. Unlike a fixed 70/30 or 50/50 offset, a random stagger breaks the joint alignment across multiple courses so the bow of one tile never lands consistently against the bow of its neighbour. The wall and floor read flatter and quieter than a fixed-offset layout produces.

One Grout Across Every Surface

Every tiled surface in the project was grouted with Prism Grout once setting was complete. Purpose: using a single grout product across the fireplace, the bathroom, the vanity splash, and the kitchen backsplash simplifies long-term maintenance for the homeowner and gives the home a consistent grout colour across every room. Property: Prism is a high-performance, stain-resistant calcium-aluminate grout that resists efflorescence and holds its colour through humidity cycling in a wet-zone bathroom and dry-zone fireplace alike. Relationship: we matched the grout tone to each surface’s dominant face so the joint disappears into the tile on every room.

Crystallina New Build Tile FAQ

How much does a whole-home tile package cost on a Crystallina new build?
For a build with a 12 by 24 stacked fireplace, mosaic vanity splash and kitchen backsplash, and a 12 by 24 main bathroom tub surround plus floor, plan on 11,500 to 19,500 dollars in labour and material, depending on tile selection.

Why use a stacked pattern on the fireplace and a random stagger in the bathroom?
The stacked pattern reads architectural and intentional on a focal-point fireplace where the eye lingers. The random stagger reads calm and flat on a bathroom surround where the goal is for the surface to recede so the fixtures and finishes take centre stage. Different rooms want different patterns from the same tile size.

How long does a new-build tile package on a single home take to install?
For a Crystallina-scale build with one fireplace, two backsplash surfaces, and one bathroom, plan on eight to twelve working days of tile work staged across the trades schedule.
