2 by 16 Kitchen Backsplash in a Trumpeter New Build
This Trumpeter new build kitchen called for one of the cleaner, most modern backsplash specs we install: a 2 by 16 porcelain in a 50/50 brick lay pattern. The 2 by 16 is the long-format evolution of the classic 3 by 6 subway, and at this aspect ratio the brick lay offset reads as crisp horizontal banding rather than the busier look you get with the same offset on a 3 by 6. The backsplash runs from counter to upper cabinets across the cook wall, with neatly mitred outside corners and a clean termination at the upper trim.
Why 2 by 16 Brick Lay Is the Right Pattern for a Modern Kitchen
The 50/50 brick lay (each row offset by exactly half the tile length) is the traditional subway pattern, but it looks different at different aspect ratios. On a 3 by 6, the offset creates a vertical zigzag that can feel busy in a small kitchen. On a 2 by 16, the same 50/50 offset creates long horizontal sweeps that elongate the wall and read as deliberately modern. Purpose: a clean, horizontal-emphasis backsplash. Properties: a 2 by 16 tile is dense, rectified (machine-cut for perfect edges), and supports a tight 1/16 inch grout joint that almost disappears at counter distance. Relationship: the long horizontal lines balance the vertical lines of upper cabinet doors and create a calm, finished cook wall.
Materials: ReliaBond Mortar on the Vertical Backsplash
The backsplash was set with ReliaBond Mortar. Purpose: ReliaBond is a Type 1 mastic specifically formulated for dry interior vertical surfaces over drywall. Properties: high initial tack, which is what holds a 2 by 16 tile in place during cure without slumping. Clean, single-component, easy clean up. Relationship: mastic is the manufacturer recommended adhesive for a dry interior backsplash. The most common installer mistake we see on inherited jobs is the use of a heavy thin-set behind a vertical backsplash where the long tile slumps under its own weight before the bond coat cures. ReliaBond is engineered to prevent exactly that failure.

Grouting: Prism for Color Consistency and Stain Resistance
We grouted the backsplash with Prism Grout. Purpose: a color consistent, high performance grout that resists kitchen staining without needing a separate sealer. Properties: calcium aluminate cement chemistry that does not efflorescence the way standard portland grouts can on a kitchen backsplash that gets wiped down daily. Relationship: Prism is the grout we pair with ReliaBond on most kitchen backsplashes because the color stays consistent from edge to edge and the surface wipes clean from cooking residue.
The Cut and Termination Details That Separate a Good Backsplash From a Great One
Most of the visible quality of a kitchen backsplash lives in the details: how the tile terminates at the upper cabinet edge, how the outside corner of the wall is handled, how cuts around the range hood, outlets, and window casing are laid out. On this Trumpeter install we set the layout so that cut tiles fall in symmetrical positions on each end of the cook wall, mitred the outside corners rather than using bullnose trim (a cleaner look in a modern kitchen), and aligned the grout joints with the outlet boxes so the electrical trim plates sit flush over the tile. Trumpeter Backsplash FAQ
How long does a kitchen backsplash take to install in Trumpeter?
For a single cook-wall backsplash of typical size (10 to 15 linear feet), plan on 2 to 3 working days. Day one is layout and tile setting, day two is grout, day three is cure and final clean.
Is 2 by 16 too long for a small galley kitchen?
No. 2 by 16 actually works well in a small kitchen because the long horizontal lines visually elongate the room. The key is laying out so cuts fall symmetrically at the ends.
Can the backsplash be installed before the countertop?
We strongly recommend installing the countertop first. The countertop sets the bottom reference line for the tile, and trying to tile up to a future counter line risks a visible gap or an uneven bottom row.
