Shower floor repair is not just for older homes. Many of our clients have recently purchased a new home and started using their shower, and the next thing you know, the tiles are popping, and the grout is cracking. Other times floors are bowing and flexing right underneath their feet. Unfortunately, some of the calls we receive are for brand-new showers and the original contractor isn’t answering the phones or providing a warranty.
At The Tile Installation Specialists, we try to come in and do the repairs while minimizing the amount of demolition involved. We start with the shower floor and the bottom of the walls to find the problem and the amount of damage created by the water on the substrate. With that information, we’re able to decide how deep to go into it, whether we need to replace the substrate and framing or just repair, waterproof, and install new tile.
Repairing and Preventing Water Leaks
Most people think that a shower floor repair is a simple and inexpensive repair because it’s only the tiles that need ot be replaced. In truth, water-damaged tiles are indicative of water pooling in the substrate below the tiles. This issue is caused by an incorrect slope, incorrect placement of the drain, and incorrect insulation of waterproofing system. Leaving these issues unresolved can lead to major repairs down the road.
A crucial piece to remember for these scenarios is that the client must have extra tile that is used for both the shower walls and the shower floor. Otherwise, the change in colour/pattern, etc. will be highly noticeable. Some clients take this opportunity to add a new tile as if the design was meant to be that way in the first place.
