Shower Floor Repair Edmonton

Shower floor repair is not just for older homes. Many of our clients have recently purchased a new home and started using their shower, and the next thing you know, the tiles are popping, and the grout is cracking. Other times floors are bowing and flexing right underneath their feet. Unfortunately, some of the calls we receive for our services are for brand-new showers and the original contractor isn’t answering the phones or providing a warranty.

Our Shower Floor Repair Process

At The Tile Experts, we come in and do the repairs while minimizing the amount of demo involved. We start with the shower floor and the bottom row of the walls to find the problem and the amount of damage created by the water on the substrate. With that information, we’re able to decide how deep to go into it.

Often we need to replace the substrate underneath and framing, otherwise we just patch it back up. Then we waterproof, install new drain kit and show pan, and lastly install new shower floor tile as well as bottom row of shower walls. Some times there are Glass Enclosures that we have to remove prior to and after doing the work and we can handle that as well.

Repairing and Preventing Water Leaks

Most people think that a shower floor repair is a simple and inexpensive repair because it’s only the tiles that need ot be replaced. In truth, water-damaged tiles are indicative of water pooling in the substrate below the tiles. This issue is caused by an incorrect slope, incorrect placement of the drain, and incorrect insulation of waterproofing system. Leaving these issues unresolved can lead to major repairs down the road.

A crucial piece to remember for these scenarios is that the client must have extra tile that is used for both the shower walls and the shower floor. Otherwise, the change in colour/pattern, etc. will be highly noticeable. Some clients take this opportunity to add a new tile as if the design was meant to be that way in the first place.

Common Signs Your Shower Floor Needs Repair

In this picture, we got a call about issues with the caulking in the glass enclosure. After a thorough inspection, we confirmed that the enclosure had been compromised. We resealed it with new caulking and tested it again, but soon realized the problem was bigger than expected. Moisture had already made its way into the laminate flooring in the adjacent room, causing it to swell. The homeowner mentioned she had noticed it before but didn’t know what was causing it.

To properly address the issue, we had to remove the bottom row of the shower walls and replace the shower pan. The homeowner decided it was the perfect time for a full renovation, and we were happy to make it happen. You can check out the finished photos in the slideshow at the bottom of this page.
