Costs varies depending on tile type (ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, mosaic), size (penny tile, 1"x1", 2"x2", 4"x4", hexagonal, triangular, floral, artistic, subway, large format, and more) and application (wall, floor, exterior, interior, on concrete, on plywood, on OSB, on drywall, on concrete board, on), installation area (wall, floor, 8' ceilings, 20' ceilings, around heated area with fire rating requirements), and complexity (curved walls, diagonal hallways, around windows, bay windows, islands, hood ranges, pillars, inlay framed, border frames and so much more). In Edmonton, typical residential tile installation ranges from $12 to $35 per sq. ft. Not including special case scenarios where is a mix of different tile materials or out of ordinary circumstances.
The timeline depends on the project size, amount of trades involved and complexity of the installation. A small bathroom floor might take a couple of days, while a full custom shower layout could take several days. We should be able to provide you an accurate estimate after an in person consultation.
Common choices for bathroom floors include matte or textured porcelain, ceramic, stone, and or even mosaic tiles. In the shower wall spaces we typically see glossy subway or large format being used; all in porcelain or ceramic material since it is denser and more water-resistant. Glossy tile is also great at helping water bounce off of the surface and run smoother down and onto the shower drain. When it comes down to the shower floor areas there are 2 approaches to it. If we are doing centre square drains, mosaics are the main things we recommend. It is ideal for shower floors due to their small size and contour flexibility allowing water to run smoothly towards the drain. Some clients like the natural stone mosaics like shaved pebbles or small round pebbles, and other clients like the small 2"x2", 3"x3", 4"x4" hexagonal porcelain. We do advise the maintenance factor on using natural stone which is just a raw material that require sealant and more TLC on a yearly basis. If we are doing a lineal drain, we can use large format tile as well as mosaic tile. For this application if a large format is an option, we recommend either textured or a matte tile is used. Mosaic is still an option for this application as well.
Yes. Our professional team of tile installers supply & install waterproofing membrane systems (like Schluter Kerdi, Wedi, Laticrete Hydro Barrier, Custom Building Products Redgard, Mapei Mapeguard & more) to create a fully contained unified layer beneath tiles. This system ensures a lasting protection against leaks. All our shower related services come with installation warranty.
Proper prep involves demolition (if needed), leveling. We then cover the structure with substrate such as drywall, wedi board or kerdi board like material in shower spaces. Bathroom floors usually have 5/8 or 3/4" OSB or Plywood so we usually install anti fracture membrane (Schluter Ditra, Custom Redgard Mat). We clean the space in depth throughout the whole process for proper bonding of materials.
On shower floors, small tiles (1–4”) are ideal for contouring and slip resistance. If a lineal drain is selected we can also use a large format tile on the shower floor as long as it is textured or matte tile. Walls and bathroom floors can use large format tiles (e.g., 12”×24”, 24" x"24", 24" x48") as well as smaller format subway tiles.
Yes, in some cases, tiling over stable existing floors is possible. However best approach is to remove any existing floor covering prior to installing new tile.
