Tile Installation Edmonton: Kerdi Shower in Windermeere

Kerdi Shower With Built-In Bench in a Windermere Renovation

This Windermere shower renovation centred on one feature that changes how the room is used every single day: a built-in tile bench. Adding a bench to a tile shower is not just a comfort upgrade, it adds a structural element that has to be framed, waterproofed, and tiled as one integrated assembly. On this build we wrapped a 12 by 24 porcelain across the shower surround in a random pattern, threaded a 12 inch mosaic waterfall insert vertically through the focal wall, and tied the bench and curb into the same waterproof envelope as the rest of the shower.

Building a Tile Shower Bench Correctly

A shower bench is the single most common point of failure on amateur tile installs because every visible surface of the bench gets stood on, sat on, and showered on. The framing has to be capable of holding a 250 plus pound load. The bench top has to slope back toward the shower (a quarter inch over the depth) so water does not pool. Every surface of the bench, including the front, top, sides, and underside has to be wrapped in waterproof membrane. The tile finish should mitre or trim the front edge so no raw porcelain shows.

Schluter Kerdi: The Layer Behind Every Surface, Including the Bench

We started this build with Schluter Kerdi Membrane across the full shower envelope: floor, four walls, ceiling area above the spray zone, and the full bench. Purpose: Kerdi is a polyethylene membrane that creates a 100 percent vapor and water proof barrier behind the tile. Properties: bonds to drywall or cement board with unmodified thinset, all seams overlap with Kerdi-Band, pre-formed pieces close the corners. Relationship: wrapping the bench in the same continuous membrane as the surround means there is no seam between the bench and the wall where water can wick through.

The Kerdi and the 12 by 24 porcelain were both set with Premium Plus Mortar, a recommended bond coat for membrane to tile and tile to membrane assemblies.

12 by 24 Surround With a 12 Inch Waterfall Mosaic

The shower walls are a 12 by 24 porcelain in a random staggered pattern. Why random rather than 50/50? Large format tile usually has a slight bow at centre length; a random stagger spreads any high points across the wall plane instead of stacking them in a line. The 12 inch wide mosaic waterfall runs vertically through the focal wall from near-ceiling down to the floor, breaking the field and acting as a visual anchor that the eye reads first.

The Mosaic Shower Floor and Pre-Pitched Drain

The shower floor is a small format mosaic which is the right tile for any shower pan because the dense grout joint network creates traction underfoot and the small format conforms to the slope of the pre-pitched pan. We sloped the shower floor a quarter inch per foot toward the drain, set the mosaic in Premium Plus Mortar, and finished the job with Prism Grout for color consistency and stain resistance. See our bathroom tile installation page for more on Kerdi shower assemblies.

Windermere Shower Renovation FAQ

How long does a Kerdi shower with a built-in bench take?
For a build with full Kerdi waterproofing, 12 by 24 surround, mosaic insert, mosaic shower floor, and a framed bench, plan on 7 to 10 working days from demo to grouted finish.

Is a tile bench worth the extra cost?
For most homeowners, yes. Beyond the daily comfort and the storage shelf use, a tile bench reads as a luxury feature at resale and is one of the most common Edmonton master bathroom asks in 2026.

Can a Kerdi shower be built over an existing tile substrate?
Usually no. The membrane needs a clean, flat, structurally sound substrate. Most renovations involve a full demo to the studs and a new cement board or drywall layer before the Kerdi goes on.
