Tile choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. Aesthetically, smaller tiles create more grout lines, which—especially with contrasting grout—can make a space feel busier and appear smaller. On the other hand, using a grout color that blends with the tile can create a more seamless look, helping the room feel larger. If budget is a concern, a 12x24 tile is often the most cost-effective option.
Typically by the time we add the proper substrate whether it is plywood, or membrane, the finished height is 3/4 of an inch when you add all layers added. Butting up to hardwood ideal because typically hardwood thickness is 3/4". When transitioning from tile to vinyl plank or lino, it is likely that a carpet tuck reducer has to be used for an angle transition.
Yes, in most instances where we are removing current floor covering and installing tile there isnt enough substrate in the floor. The building code for tile installation practices states that we require a minimum of 1 1/4 of substrate in order to install tile over top. Instead of increasing the height of the floor by so much, the anti-fracture membrane technology allows us to minimize the height build up that would've otherwise would be required. In addition, for our organization to warranty our installation we require the anti-fracture membrane to be installed prior to tiling and grouting.
The easiest way to find out the thickness of your subfloor / substrate is to find a heat register and pull it out. Look on the edge where the floor meets the vent lining and that should allow to inspect the thickness.
