Tile Installation Edmonton: Backsplash in Blackburn

Mixed-Size Glass Tile Backsplash in Blackburn, Edmonton

This Blackburn kitchen backsplash is one of the more design-driven installs The Tile Experts have completed in southeast Edmonton. The homeowner selected a custom glass mosaic that combines multiple tile sizes in a deliberately random pattern, with each sheet pre-assembled on a mesh back to lock the layout. The result is a backsplash that reads handmade rather than gridded, with light bouncing off every facet of the glass at slightly different angles. It is also a study in what to do (and what to avoid) when installing glass tile on a kitchen wall.

What Makes a Multi-Size Glass Mosaic Different to Install

A standard backsplash is a single repeating module: subway, hex, picket, or square. The installer’s job is to keep the grid square and the joints uniform, and the wall takes care of itself. A multi-size random mosaic flips that. Each tile arrives bonded to a mesh sheet, but the sheets themselves have to line up so the random pattern continues across the seams without revealing the repeat. On this Blackburn job that meant pre-laying the dry sheets across a workbench before any adhesive went on the wall, indexing the edge of each sheet against the next, and rotating a handful of sheets 90 or 180 degrees to break up any visible pattern repeat. The tile only goes on the wall after the workbench layout reads correctly.

Why Glass Tile Needs a White Adhesive and a Smooth Substrate

Glass is translucent. Whatever sits behind it shows through. On a standard ceramic or porcelain backsplash the installer can use a grey thinset and a slightly textured substrate without any effect on the finish. On glass, both of those choices show up as shadows under the tile. We addressed this in two ways. The substrate behind the tile was skim-coated and sanded smooth so no trowel ridge could telegraph through the glass. And we used ReliaBond Tile Adhesive, which is a white-bodied Type 1 mastic, as the adhesive layer. Purpose: the white adhesive preserves the true color of the glass mosaic; a grey thinset would dull the same product by two or three shades. Property: ReliaBond is rated for interior dry walls and has the grab needed to hold mosaic sheets vertically without sliding. Relationship: the wall, the white adhesive, and the glass tile combine into a layered assembly where each layer respects the optics of the one above it.

Setting the Sheets: Working Section by Section, Indexing Every Joint

We installed the mosaic in roughly two-foot wide sections, working from the centerline of the range outward to the left and right. Working from the center keeps any cut tiles at the edges symmetric, which is a small detail no one consciously notices but everyone subconsciously feels. Each sheet was pressed into the mastic with a flat beating block and a rubber mallet, which sets the entire sheet to the same depth and forces any high tiles back into plane. We used 1/16 inch wedge spacers between sheets to keep the seam joint identical to the joints within the sheet, which is the only way to hide the seam in a random pattern. Grouting Glass: Why the Wrong Grout Will Scratch a Whole Wall

Glass tile is hard at the body but soft at the edges where the cut face is exposed. The wrong grout (sanded grout in particular, on small joints) will drag the sand across the glass during clean-up and leave a fine network of micro-scratches that catch light forever. We grouted this backsplash with a high-performance, stain-resistant Prism Grout in a non-sanded formulation matched to the joint width. The grout went on with a soft rubber float held at a low angle, and the haze cleanup used a clean cellulose sponge rinsed every two passes. The finished joints are tight, color-consistent, and free of the haze film that survives if cleanup is rushed.

Blackburn Glass Backsplash FAQ

How much does a custom glass mosaic backsplash cost in Blackburn?
For a standard kitchen with 30 to 40 square feet of glass mosaic, plan on 2,400 to 4,500 dollars in labour and material. Multi-size random patterns sit at the higher end of that range because of the additional layout time.

Will the glass tile chip from a dropped pan or utensil?
Glass mosaic is more chip-prone than porcelain at the immediate edge of the tile, but the small module size means any chip is local to one piece. We always keep a small bag of overage tile after the job so an isolated repair is straightforward years later.

Can the backsplash be cleaned with standard kitchen sprays?
Yes. Glass is one of the easiest backsplash materials to clean. A pH-neutral glass cleaner and a soft cloth handle daily wipe-downs. Avoid abrasive scouring pads, which can dull the surface over time.
